Media Investigation

Technology:

  • Talkies
  • Fordism

Fordism refers to an attitude to the making of a product by throwing it together and getting it sold e.g a movie with the director not not necessarily being a creative mind. A few large companies came to dominate the key sectors of the economy, they decided the market, and decided what consumers would be offered. Talkies is the nickname given to talking pictures which were films including synchronized dialogue with the visual rather than text on the screen.

Narrative:

A narrative is a story or a spoken/written account of events that gives detail of what the story entails. The plot of a story is the order of which the event take place. This is important because without the story it would become confusing and would be harder for the reader/viewer to follow.

Audience

The audience is the group of people that the product is aimed at and is important because without the audience there isn’t any point in the product. The audience can also be the people who give you the feedback you need to improve or to know how well you have done.

Representation

Representation can be shown using ethnicity in films tackling or featuring political issues. It can also be shown with age when a kid is shown as incapable or weak or women being shown as negatively. It is important that these are all carefully executed throughout production because if done even slightly wrong it could offend many people. For example when adverts get complaints it is sometimes to do with these issues.

Regulation

The BBFC is responsible for giving films an age ratingto decide what audience is appropriate for viewig the film. They use official guide lines for certain age ranges to make sure that the film is suitable for that film.

Production/Distribution/Exhibition

Production is the process of making the film or TV show where the cinematography, production design, acting etc takes place. The distribution company decides how many copies of the film to make and shows the movie to potential buyers representing the theaters. The buyers negotiate with the distribution company which movies they want to lease and the terms of the lease agreement. Exhibition is when the film is released in to cinemas or on to streaming platforms such as Netflix. After its initial release it is released on Blue ray, DVD, on demand etc.

Genre

The genre of a film can have an effect in the audience that watch it. If it’s a romance it’s stereotypical that the audience would be heavily female. It can also have an effect on the age rating of a film because if it was a romance or rom com it depend on how graphic love scenes are and if it was a horror it could depend on how graphic the violence and gore is.

Marketing And Promotion

In marketing promotion means any type of marketing used to persuade target audiences of the relative features of a product. It helps marketers to build a relationship with customers to make sure they return in the future. A good example of this would be Tesco with their club card and In store deals and discounts.

Eminem, A Star Study

Eminem

Career: Music

Genre: Hip Hop &Rap

Albums In Order:

Infiniteinfinite

Eminem’s first album. When Eminem was signed by Dr Dre he released Infinite as his first professional album but hadn’t yet hit mainstream popularity until he released the Marshal Mathers LP.

 The Eminem Showeminem show

On this album he surprised everyone by adding in a song about his daughter called “Hailie’s Song” where for the whole song except one verse he was singing rather than rapping.

Encoreencore

At the time of this album’s release Eminem was on drugs and drinking a lot which is why he was using his alter ego as slim shady and making relentlessly dirty and rude but funny songs.

Curtain Callcurtain call

Encore Is the home to a lot of his old hits such as Stan, Mockingbird, The Real Slim Shady, Just Lose It and When I’m Gone.

Relapserelapse

As the title suggests Eminem had passed his drug use phase and started to fix his ways and focused on his music returning with Relapse, an album with 20 songs.

Recoveryrecovery

This is the album that Eminem returns with a year later with the hits ‘Not Afraid’, ‘No Love’ Featuring Lil Wayne and ‘Love The Way You Lie’ featuring Rihanna.

RevivalRevival

When this album came out most people reacted to it negatively and gave Eminem a lot of hate for it. Personally I don’t think it was bad and that it has some good songs but I can see what people meant about some of the songs.

KamikazeKamikaze

As a result of people reacting so bad he returned in 2018 with a surprise album called Kamikaze where he told the people who gave him such bad press what he thinks about them.

Music To Be Murdered Bymusic to be murdered by

Eminem’s latest installment. This album also has 20 songs and really showcases how different his style of rapping has become since ‘Infinite’.

Abstract

In this Star Study I plan to research how Eminem made his career and how he got so popular so quickly and why he is still the most famous rapper. I think the reason he is different is because he doesn’t just rap about the things that have happened in his life and make up funny stories in lyrics to fit with where he’s going with the verse, he raps about stuff in a very clever ways using various different metaphors, phrasing, flows (the way he delivers the lyrics) and switching his flow frequently while doing all this at different speeds sometimes really fast and pronouncing every syllable perfectly. I plan to explore why this is the way he makes his music. I want to compare how different his music has become since his early albums to see his development as an artist. I also would like to express my opinion on how I think his music has been gradually less and less liked because it’s almost like he has proven himself so much and continuing to make that point is getting a bit old. I think if he were to make more songs where he just sings instead of raps (maybe with one verse where he raps) he will get more peoples attention because his singing voice is quite good and the songs he already has where he sings are really good because it’s nice to hear something different. The reason I’m investigating this is to see how Eminem has changed his style over the years and how he has developed his skill.

For my research I plan to analyse lyrics from old songs and new songs to see how his style has changed. I also want to find out how what he raps about has changed. In his younger years he makes a few more jokes in his lyrics and has a juvenile sense of humor where as in more recent songs he still has a juvenile sense of humor but it is less prominent in his words and these days he sticks to a more to a viscous but still funny sense humor and about serious things happening in his life.

The Real slim Shady

This song is a good example of his old humor.

Intro
May I have your attention, please?
May I have your attention, please?
Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?
I repeat, will the real Slim Shady please stand up?
We’re gonna have a problem here
Verse 1
Y’all act like you never seen a white person before
Jaws all on the floor like Pam like Tommy just burst in the door
And started whoopin’ her ass worse than before
They first were divorced, throwin’ her over furniture (Agh!)
It’s the return of the “Ah, wait, no way, you’re kidding
He didn’t just say what I think he did, did he?”
And Dr. Dre said, nothing, you idiots!
Dr. Dre’s dead, he’s locked in my basement (ha ha!)
Feminist women love Eminem
“Chicka, chicka, chicka, Slim Shady, I’m sick of him
Look at him, walkin’ around, grabbin’ his you-know-what
Flippin’ the you-know-who, ” “Yeah, but he’s so cute though.”
Yeah, I probably got a couple of screws up in my head loose
But no worse than what’s goin’ on in your parents’ bedrooms
Sometimes I wanna get on TV and just let loose
But can’t, but it’s cool for Tom Green to hump a dead moose
“My bum is on your lips, my bum is on your lips”
And if I’m lucky, you might just give it a little kiss
And that’s the message that we deliver to little kids
And expect them not to know what a woman’s clitoris is
Of course they’re gonna know what intercourse is
By the time they hit fourth grade
They’ve got the Discovery Channel, don’t they?
We ain’t nothin’ but mammals—well, some of us, cannibals
Who cut other people open like cantaloupes
But if we can hump dead animals and antelopes
Then there’s no reason that a man and another man can’t elope
But if you feel like I feel, I got the antidote
Women, wave your pantyhose, sing the chorus, and it goes
Chorus
I’m Slim Shady, yes I’m the real Shady
All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating
So won’t the real Slim Shady please stand up
Please stand up, please stand up?
‘Cause I’m Slim Shady, yes I’m the real Shady
All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating
So won’t the real Slim Shady please stand up
Please stand up, please stand up?
Verse 2
Will Smith don’t gotta cuss in his raps to sell records
Well, I do, so fuck him and fuck you too!
You think I give a damn about a Grammy?
Half of you critics can’t even stomach me, let alone stand me
“But Slim, what if you win, wouldn’t it be weird?”
Why, so you guys could just lie to get me here?
So you can sit me here next to Britney Spears?
Shit, Christina Aguilera better switch me chairs
So I can sit next to Carson Daly and Fred Durst
And hear ’em argue over who she gave head to first
Little bitch put me on blast on MTV
“Yeah, he’s cute, but I think he’s married to Kim, hee-hee.”
I should download her audio on MP3
And show the whole world how you gave Eminem VD
I’m sick of you little girl and boy groups
All you do is annoy me, so I have been sent here to destroy you
And there’s a million of us just like me
Who cuss like me, who just don’t give a fuck like me
Who dress like me, walk, talk and act like me
And just might be the next best thing, but not quite me
Chorus
‘Cause I’m Slim Shady, yes I’m the real Shady
All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating
So won’t the real Slim Shady please stand up
Please stand up, please stand up?
‘Cause I’m Slim Shady, yes I’m the real Shady
All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating
So won’t the real Slim Shady please stand up
Please stand up, please stand up?
Verse 3
I’m like a head trip to listen to, ’cause I’m only givin’ you
Things you joke about with your friends inside your livin’ room
The only difference is I got the balls to say it in front of y’all
And I don’t gotta be false or sugarcoat it at all
I just get on the mic and spit it
And whether you like to admit it, I just shit it
Better than 90% of you rappers out can
Then you wonder: “How can
Kids eat up these albums like Valiums?”
It’s funny, ’cause at the rate I’m going, when I’m 30
I’ll be the only person in the nursing home flirting
Pinching nurse’s asses when I’m jacking off with Jergens
And I’m jerking, but this whole bag of Viagra isn’t working
And every single person is a Slim Shady lurking
He could be working at Burger King, spittin’ on your onion rings
Or in the parking lot, circling, screaming, “I don’t give a fuck!”
With his windows down and his system up
So will the real Shady please stand up
And put one of those fingers on each hand up?
And be proud to be outta your mind and outta control
And one more time, loud as you can, how does it go?
‘Cause I’m Slim Shady, yes I’m the real Shady
All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating
So won’t the real Slim Shady please stand up
Please stand up, please stand up?
‘Cause I’m Slim Shady, yes I’m the real Shady
All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating
So won’t the real Slim Shady please stand up
Please stand up, please stand up?
Outro
Ha ha, I guess there’s a Slim Shady in all of us
Fuck it, let’s all stand up!

This song from the Marshall Mathers LP is a good example of how the album brought controversy with his lyrics being seen as offensive and inappropriate by critics. To silence critics, in 2001 Eminem performed a duet with openly gay musician Elton John at the Grammy Awards where The Marshall Mathers LP was nominated for best album of the year.

Godzilla

I can swallow a bottle of alcohol and I’ll feel like Godzilla
Better hit the deck like the card dealer
My whole squad’s in here, walking around the party
A cross between a zombie apocalypse and big Bobby “The
Brain” Heenan which is probably the
Same reason I wrestle with mania
Shady’s in this bitch, I’m posse’d up
Consider it to cross me a costly mistake
If they sleepin’ on me, the hoes better get insomnia
Adhd, Hydroxycut
Pass the Courvoisi’ (ayy, ayy)
In AA with an AK, melee, finna set it like a playdate
Better vacate, retreat like a vacay, mayday (ayy)
This beat is cray-cray, Ray J, H-A-H-A-H-A
Laughing all the way to the bank, I spray flames
They cannot tame or placate the
Monster (ayy)
You get in my way, I’ma feed you to the monster (yeah)
I’m normal during the day, but at night, turn to a monster (yeah)
When the moon shines like Ice Road Truckers
I look like a villain outta those blockbusters
Godzilla, fire spitter, monster
Blood on the dance floor, and on the Louis V carpet
Fire, Godzilla, fire, monster
Blood on the dance floor, and on the Louis V carpet
I’m just a product of Slick Rick and Onyx, told ’em, “Lick the balls”
Had ’em just appalled at so many things that pissed ’em off
It’s impossible to list ’em all
And in the midst of all this
I’m in a mental hospital with a crystal ball
Tryna see, will I still be like this tomorrow?
Risperdal, voices whisper
My fist is balled back up against the wall, pencil drawn
This is just the song to go ballistic on
You just pulled a pistol on the guy with the missile launcher
I’m just a Loch Ness, the mythological
Quick to tell a bitch screw off like a fifth of Vodka
When you twist the top of the bottle, I’m a
Monster (ayy)
You get in my way, I’ma feed you to the monster (yeah)
I’m normal during the day, but at night, turn to a monster (yeah)
When the moon shines like Ice Road Truckers
I look like a villain outta those blockbusters
Godzilla, fire spitter, monster
Blood on the dance floor, and on the Louis V carpet
Fire, Godzilla, fire, monster
Blood on the dance floor, and on the Louis V carpet
If you never gave a damn, raise your hand
‘Cause I’m about to set trip, vacation plans
I’m on point like my index is, so all you will ever get is
The motherfuckin’ finger (finger), prostate exam (‘xam)
How can I have all these fans and perspire?
Like a liar’s pants, I’m on fire
And I got no plans to retire and I’m still the man you admire
These chicks are spazzin’ out, I only get more handsome and flier
I got ’em passin’ out like what you do when you hand someone flyers
And what goes around comes around just like the blades on a chainsaw
‘Cause I caught the flap of my dollar stack right off the bat like a baseball
Like Kid Ink, bitch, I got them racks with so much ease that they call me Diddy
‘Cause I make bands and I call getting cheese a cakewalk (cheesecake) yeah
Bitch, I’m a player, I’m too motherfuckin’ stingy for Cher
Won’t even lend you an ear, ain’t even pretending to care
But I tell a bitch I’ll marry her if she’ll bury her
Face on my genital area, the original Richard Ramirez
Christian Rivera, ’cause my lyrics never sit well
So they wanna give me the chair
Like a paraplegic, and it’s scary, call it Harry Caray
‘Cause every Tom and Dick and Harry carry a Merriam motherfuckin’ dictionary
Got ’em swearing up and down, they can’t spit, this shit’s hilarious
It’s time to put these bitches in the obituary column
We wouldn’t see eye to eye with a staring problem
Get the shaft like a steering column (monster)
Trigger happy, pack heat, but it’s black ink
Evil half of the Bad Meets Evil
That means take a back seat
Take it back to Fat Petes with a maxi, single
Look at my rap sheet, what attracts these people
Is my gangster, bitch, like Apache with a catchy jingle
I stack chips, you barely got a half-eaten Cheeto
Fill ’em with the venom and eliminate ’em
Other words, I Minute Maid ’em
I don’t wanna hurt ’em, but I did ’em in a fit of rage
I’m murderin’ again, nobody will evade him
Finna kill ’em and dump all the fuckin’ bodies in the lake
Obliterating everything, incinerate and renegade ’em
And I make anybody who want it with the pen afraid
But don’t nobody want it, but they’re gonna get it anyway
‘Cause I’m beginnin’ to feel like I’m mentally ill
I’m Atilla, kill or be killed, I’m a killer bee, the vanilla gorilla
You’re bringin’ the killer within me out of me
You don’t want to be the enemy of the demon who went in me
Or being the recievin’ end of me, what stupidity it’d be
Every bit of me is the epitome of a spitter
When I’m in the vicinity, motherfucker, you better duck
Or you finna be dead the minute you run into me
A hunnid percent of you is a fifth of a percent of me
I’m ’bout to fuckin’ finish you bitch, I’m unfadable
You wanna battle, I’m available, I’m blowin’ up like an inflatable
I’m undebatable, I’m unavoidable, I’m unevadable
I’m on the toilet bowl, I got a trailer full of money and I’m paid in full
I’m not afraid to pull the
Man, stop
Look what I’m plannin’, haha

Essay

Marshall Bruce Mathers III commonly known as Eminem was born on October 17th 1972 in St. Joseph Missouri USA. He is known for being an american rapper, record producer, and actor who was once labeled as one of the most-controversial and best-selling artists of the early 21st century.

Growing up Eminem had a rough childhood having lived in poverty and abusive house holds. At age 14 he began rapping in clubs in Detroit Michigan and when he would often miss school it resulted in keeping him in the ninth grade for a third year and eventually he quit school determined to make it in hip hop music. Under the name Eminem he built a reputation for himself in the hip-hop underground world as a solo artist and as a member of the Detroit-based rap group D12 also known as the Dirty Dozen. His first album Infinite (1996), sold poorly and he continued to work mundane jobs such as short order cook at Gilbert’s Lodge in Michigan.

When Eminem placed second in the freestyle category at the 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles, he came to the attention of Dr. Dre, founding member of pioneering rappers N.W.A. and the head of Aftermath Entertainment. By that time Eminem had developed the persona of the ruthless Slim Shady who often came out vulgar and violent lyrics. With Dr. Dre as his producer and mentor, Eminem released The Slim Shady LP early in 1999. Benefiting from the inventive channel-surfing music video for the hit song “My Name Is” and the instant credibility of Dr. Dre’s involvement. The album sold several million copies and Eminem won two Grammy Awards and four MTV music video awards.

Grounded in his life experience but seemingly reflecting a troubled state of mind, Eminem’s songs outraged many, including the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, which denounced him as a homophobic misogynist. His abusive relationship with his wife Kim was translated into his songs in which he rapped about killing her. In 2000 Eminem was charged with assault when he allegedly pistol-whipped a man he saw kissing her. The couple divorced in 2001 and their relationship remained rocky (in 2006 the couple remarried and divorced again). His mother also sued him for defamation of character in song and in interviews.

In 2000 Eminem released The Marshall Mathers LP which set a record in the United States for the fastest-selling rap album. The success of the album which included the hit singles “The Real Slim Shady” and “Stan,” brought more controversy. Later that year he recorded the album Devil’s Night with D12 and toured with the group. He also created his own record label Shady Records. The D12 collective, 50 Cent and other rappers signed to and released albums with the label.

Eminem returned in 2002 with The Eminem Show which proved to be nearly as popular as The Marshall Mathers LP. Also that year he made his acting debut in the movie based on his life “8 Mile”. The gritty film was a critical and commercial success. The following year he won an Academy Award for “Lose Yourself,” a song featured in the movie. After teaming back up with D12 for D12 World (2004), Eminem released Encore (2004) and a greatest-hits set Curtain Call: The Hits (2005), both of which sold well but failed to garner as much attention as his previous albums had. He then stepped out of the public eye resurfacing briefly in 2006 to eulogize friend and D12 member Proof who was killed outside a Detroit nightclub. Two years later Eminem published the memoir The Way I Am which included photos, drawings and lyrics.

In 2009 he released Relapse which marked Eminem’s first collection of new material in five years. Although it featured solid production from Dr. Dre the album met with middling reviews because of its over-the-top attempts to shock and its somewhat dated catalog of pop culture references. However the single “Crack a Bottle” became Eminem’s second song to top the billboard singles chart after “Lose Yourself” and Eminem won Grammy Awards for both the song and the album. His next album Recovery (2010) was a response to the criticisms leveled at Relapse. Although Eminem was no longer seen as the the face of hip-hop Recovery demonstrated that he remained a force to be reckoned with as the singles “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie” featuring Rihanna both became major hits. Eminem teamed up with Rihanna for a second time on “The Monster” from The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (2013) and the album became his sixth to win the Grammy Award for best rap album. Eminem received mixed reviews for Revival (2017) with other rappers criticizing the lack of skill and over use of samples from other famous songs. Kamikaze (2018) was described by many critics as somewhat bad tempered as it featured songs with responses to people who criticized the previous album even dissing rapper Machine Gun Kelly and starting a feud between them. This criticism had little impact on sales however and in 2020 Music to Be Murdered By became his 10th consecutive album to debut at the top of the billboard 200 chart. In addition, Eminem occasionally collaborated with rapper Royce da 5′9″ under the name Bad Meets Evil; among their releases was the EP Hell: The Sequel (2011).
