Corporate Video

This corporate film had a lot of moving shots such as pans from left to right and up and down. It also had quite a few push ins and pull outs to focus on what they were showing like in the shot of the drill. The movement of the camera makes the video look more active and more interesting whereas if they had used static shots it would not look as good. It’s not clear who their target audience are as it just shows bits of heavy machinery. Also the music is a bit too intense and sounds like it should be in an action film.

The video starts off with heavy use of time lapse and quick cuts between shots of people working with heavy machinery and the camera panning around them to get a good view of their work. At first it seems like a video promoting Microsoft as it shows shots of the building from a helicopter focusing on the logo and shots inside the building showing pans around the offices with people at work. It’s not until one minute and 10 seconds in it starts to talk about Microsoft working with signage companies designing, building and installing signs on the building. This explains why there were shots of people using heavy machinery as it was showing people building the signs. An effective technique used with the interviews is the J cut. An example of this is where you hear someone explaining how Signtech (the company that implemented the signs) were brought in and then it cuts to show the person in the interview room.

The transitions used in this video make it look very professional and slick. when interviewing people they use cut away shots showing what is being talked about such as the construction sites, Computer Aided Design and schematics. In the interviews the shot composition shows that grid lines were used to position the interviewees as they are off to one side and not placed directly in the middle. The use of images in cut aways makes it look a bit stiff as nothing is moving in the background, the only movement in these shots are zooms and pans which would have been added in post production by using markers. The music in this video fits with the formal style of the video as it’s calm and quiet in the mix and also sounds hopeful which fits with the interviewees talking about the company positively.

Proposals For Three Companies

Hidden Jewel Tattoos:

We are looking to make a corporate/promotional non profit video for a tattoo company as we would like to promote creative and artistic companies in the Exeter and Exmouth area. we would like to film in the tattoo parlour and possibly with consent of the artist and customer, film a tattoo being done.

The video would only be two to three minutes long and therefore only take about a day to film, one and a half to two days at most in case we need to re shoot anything or the client wants any extra content added.

The target audience would be people in the local area looking for a reliable tattoo parlour with talented artists and high quality designs.

This promotional video would be made to be put on the company’s social media and/or their website to showcase what they have to offer.

Hidden Jewel Tattoos have quite a large customer base because they appeal to anyone who want to get a tattoo. This could be someone who decides to get a tattoo for the experience, someone who likes art and is interested in having something creative tattooed on them e.g original pattern, quote or image with meaning or someone who wants a tattoo of a band they might be in or like. A big customer base for tattoo parlours are skateboarders, fans of hip hop and fans of heavy metal because the typical style they wear tends to include being covered in tattoos or at least have some. Hidden Jewel Tattoos could use a corporate video to put on their website to show a bit more about them and give some more information as all I could find on there was a brief description, photos of customers who had just had tattoos done, contact details, photos of the studio and aftercare techniques. While this does provide some information it doesn’t tell much about the artists and where it is.

Manson’s Guitars:

We are looking to make a corporate/promotional non profit video for a music shop as we would like to promote creative and artistic companies in the Exeter and Exmouth area. we would like to film in the shop itself and possibly with consent of the staff member or customer, film a jam session in one of the studios.

The video would only be two to three minutes long and therefore only take about a day to film, one and a half to two days at most in case we need to re shoot anything or the client wants any extra content added.

The target audience would be people in the local area looking for a reliable music store with talented staff and high quality instruments and music gear.

This promotional video would be made to be put on the company’s social media and/or their website to showcase what they have to offer.

Mansons is the most popular music store in the Exeter area and has a very good reputation among musicians. This is why their website is really good and has plenty of information about events, deals and stock. I think that Mansons need a corporate video to help show their store and equipment as it will glamorize the experience and potentially attract new customers. This could also be helpful because the store is a bit hidden away in the arcade on fore street.
Maker Maker:
We are looking to make a corporate/promotional non profit video for a music shop as we would like to promote creative and artistic companies in the Exeter and Exmouth area. we would like to film in the shop itself and possibly with consent of the staff members and customers, film a ukulele lesson being taught.

The video would only be two to three minutes long and therefore only take about a day to film, one and a half to two days at most in case we need to re shoot anything or the client wants any extra content added.

The target audience would be people in the local area looking for a reliable music store with talented staff and high quality instruments and music gear.

This promotional video would be made to be put on the company’s social media and/or their website to showcase what they have to offer.

website 3

Maker Maker is a small ukulele business in St Leonards Exeter and only has one branch of the shop. They mainly focus their promotion on their social medias (twitter, facebook, instagram etc). Their website is mostly blank showing only a little bit about them, an address and a product page that shows the words “No Products”. I think that Maker Maker need a corporate video because they have next to no promotion and it would be a perfect addition to their website.

We are looking to make a corporate/promotional non profit video for the journalism course at Exeter College as we would like to promote it for students who are interested in starting a career in journalism in the South Devon area. With permission we would like to film some of the students working on their blogs and written work to get some B-roll.

The video would only be two to three minutes long and therefore only take about a day to film, one and a half to two days at most in case we need to re shoot anything or the client wants any extra content added.

The target audience would be students in the South Devon area looking for a Journalism course best suited to them.

Sam’s Edit

Feedback From Client

After viewing my video the client told me that the order of the footage in the video was good but it should have opened with the interview and then showed some of the B roll instead of starting with it because it looked like photography and that made it confusing. If the interview came first it would give space in the middle for B roll and it would act as a break between interviews.

Peer Feedback

They liked how I had overlaid audio to create cutaways in the in the first interview scene at the beginning when I showed guest speaker in the lecture. The structure was also well received with the two interviews being cut together and not showing the questions being asked just them being answered. One of the problems was the shaky footage which for some shots had to be hand held but others we could have used a tripod. Also they said the audio was a bit too quiet in the second interview which made the music volume level drop quite obvious.

Personal Reflection

Our conduct with our client was professional but also relaxed because it was with one of our teachers so it didn’t seem like a professional environment as such. We still executed the project properly when it came to filming and working with other students. This project was by far my least favourite because of the companies we contacted not responding to us and all the other projects going on at the same time getting in the way and distracting us. This led to us being very behind and frustrated with the project. I would definitely not consider going into corporate video as a career as I did not like any part of this project.

Critical Moment Reflection

A significant point in our project was when we were looking for a client and everyone we contacted either kept ignoring us or turned us down and everyone else in the class was going out filming for the day while we were still on the first stage. This is when we started to get behind because we weren’t getting anywhere. We didn’t really know what to do except continue to email other companies until I was lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to work with either the Exeter chiefs or the Exeter city football club who were doing charity events and liked the idea of having a promotional video made for it. After choosing the chiefs and some emailing back and forth unfortunately this fell through because of some confusion about what dates the event was happening on and not being sure what we were meant to do with them. At this point most people were editing and finishing their videos so we had to go with the last resort option of making a video promoting a course in the college.
